  Large-Scale Comparative Phenotypic and Genomic Analyses Reveal Ecological Preferences of Shewanella Species and Identify Metabolic Pathways Conserved at the Genus Level
Using comparative genomics and Phenotype MicroArraysTM, genomic predictions were confirmed, and the authors made insights into niche specialization of five Shewanella species.  They found that species originating in rivers utilized many more carbon sources than species from deep marine sediment.  Consistent with findings from the S. oneidensis MR-1 genome, they found that carbon sources utilized by all strains enter central metabolism at the 2 or 3 carbon level.

 Selection of Bacteria Capable of Dissimilatory Reduction of Fe(III) from a Long-term Continuous Culture on Molasses and Their Use in a Microbial Fuel Cell
Using a sample of eutrophic lake bottom sediment as inoculum for a long term continuous culture in the presence of Fe(III), the authors identify two Shewanellarelated bacterial clones  These non-marine Fe(III) reducing bacteria were selected for evaluation of carbon catabolism using Biolog PM plates. The utility of these bacteria was demonstrated the in microbial fuel cells.

 Shewanella knowledgebase: integration of the experimental data and computational predictions suggests a biological role for transcription of intergenic regions
The authors describe a knowledgebase containing both experimental and genomic data and tools for curating genome annotations and integration of experimental data, including Phenotype MicroArray data.  A single microarray data set is used as a case study to illustrate the utility of the knowledgebase.  The integrated analysis predicted a new type of transcriptional regulation.
